Abstract
It has been shown that the vaginal cytology sharply reflects the status of pregnancies e.g. early pregnancy, pregnancy at term, pathological conditions etc., and has been utilized for the diagnosis of pregnancy. We have studied the vaginal cytology on the 414 cases of pregnant women visited the Prenatal Clinic of the Department of Obstetrics, Seoul National University Hospital during the period of Feb. 1st to the end of August, 1972. The results are summerized as follows: 1) The KI and MI were a good indication for evaluation of prognosis at early pregnancy. As far as the KI remains less than 30% without right side shifting of MI, the pregnancy continued normally even thouth the vaginal bleeding and other findings are highly suggestive of abortion. 2) Average normal KI at the mid-trimester is less than 20% except few cases of infection and pregnancy toxemia. 3) Increased KI per cent, right shifting of MI, and decreased clustering of vaginal epithelial cells were observed in the most cases of pregnancy toxemia, however, several cases of severe pregnancy toxemia paradoxically showed left shifting of MI. 4) Vaginal cytology at term of pregnancy is cheracterized by the sudden right side shifting of MI, increase of KI, scattering of vaginal epithelial cells and loss of cytoplasmic folding. These typical vaginal cytology of pregnancy at term resulted in normal delivery within 7 days in 85% of the cases. 50 Vaginal cytology at puerperium is characterized by marked left side shifting of MI, and in some cases, the smears disclosed purely pasabasal cells. 6) In the cases of bacterial and trichomonas infection, the vaginal cytology shows pseudoright side shifting due to abnormal cytoplasmic stainability.
